Wednesday ended up with nothing to show for a battling second-half display in a 2-1 defeat at Charlton this afternoon.
We also played the closing moments with 10 men and Liam Palmer in goal after keeper Ethan Horvath was red-carded as we slipped to the bottom of the Championship on goal difference.
The Owls trailed 2-0 at the interval, hardly laying a glove on mediocre opposition but, attacking the end housing the sellout 3,000-plus Wednesday fans in the second half, we left the field at the end somewhat unfortunate not to have taken a point.
Charlton put us under early pressure but we missed a great chance on 10 minutes, the unmarked Jamal Lowe heading straight at home keeper Thomas Kaminski from inside the six-yard box.
And we paid for that minutes later when Horvath spilt Sonny Carey’s shot from the edge of the box and the Charlton man was first to react to the rebound to net.
The home side continued to dominate and with Wednesday posing few threats Charlton doubled their lead in first-half added time when Reece Burke headed in from a free kick.
However, we looked sharper and more aggressive from early in the second period, Sevante Ingelsson heading just over the bar after a fine move involving Barry Bannan and Max Lowe.
Jamal Lowe then fired over before Wednesday pulled back a deserved goal on 69 minutes.
Bannan set up Sean Fusire, his shot from the edge of the penalty area came back off the post and Jamal Lowe was on hand to steer in the loose ball.
The Owls continued to press forward as we chased an equaliser and our best opening came 10 minutes from time when Max Lowe sent in a cracking cross from the left but Ike Ugbo failed to connect properly with his diving header and the chance was gone.
And then came the final moment of drama on 95 minutes when Horvath clashed with Tanto Olaofe as they both challenged for a through ball.
Referee Tom Reeves did not appear to give a foul either way in the immediate aftermath but after both players had received treatment, Horvath was shown the red card.
That left Palmer to take the gloves for the last few seconds and he was relieved to see Macaulay Gillesphey send the ensuing free kick high into the Charlton fans behind the goal.
