Wednesday were minutes away from a first home league win of the season in a 1-1 draw with Leicester at Hillsborough this afternoon.

Jerry Yates gave us the lead after just two minutes when he turned the ball home from almost on the line after the visitors failed to clear a corner.

However, while we were unable to get another effort on target, Pierce Charles produced a goalkeeping masterclass and was only beaten on 84 minutes when Jordan Ayew fired home the equaliser from the edge of the box.

Head coach Henrik Pedersen told BBC Radio Sheffield after the young keeper’s five-star display: “He is a fantastic goalkeeper. Normally we speak about Pierce being top with his feet, today he also showed how mentally strong he is and how strong he is defensively. It was a top performance from him.

“I think there’s nobody that has doubt for his potential. He has a big, big future, that’s why we are really, really proud and really happy that he’s a part of Sheffield Wednesday. We will do everything we can to keep him for the future.”

After Yates’ opener, Charles made a flying save from Oliver Skipp’s close-range effort and he went full length to keep out a 20-yarder from Stephy  Mavididi as Leicester looked to draw level before the break.

Then, just after the hour we missed a great chance to double the lead when Olaf Kobacki set up Liam Palmer but he dragged his angled shot wide of the far post.

That was just about our only effort of the second half while the outstanding Charles continued to  foil  Leicester.

Ayew saw a header come back off the inside of a post before Charles pulled off a tremendous double save to foil Patson Daka and Ricardo Pereira.

Luke Thomas headed against the bar, Ayew struck his late equaliser and then the same player almost snatched the winner for the Foxes in added time, fittingly denied by another top-class tipover save from Charles to preserve the point for the Owls.
