Wednesday turn their focus back onto the Championship tomorrow when we travel to Sunderland for a lunchtime clash at the Stadium of Light.
We go into the game in good spirits after an opening day 4-0 league win over Plymouth and then the midweek Carabao Cup success at Hull, while Sunderland won their Championship opener 2-0 at Cardiff but lost by the same score in the cup at Preston.
Danny Rohl changed the entire starting line-up at Hull from the Plymouth team three days earlier but can be expected to revert to the same initial eleven who beat the Pilgrims for tomorrow’s game.
Coincidentally, this first away league game of the season will be at the same ground that saw us seal our Championship survival on the last day of the 2023-24 campaign, first-half goals from Liam Palmer and Josh Windass bringing us a 2-0 win.
Rohl said ahead of tomorrow’s game: “The only topic now is the next game and that is Sunderland – we must be fresh, be sharp and in the last days I see this in my players. The way we have managed this week it is not easy when we played with two different teams – but we have done well.
“It has been a hard week, those who didn’t play in the game on Wednesday trained instead, it was not a day off, it was training for them to be ready for Sunderland.
“It will not be an easy one but with two wins this season we go there with a lot of self-confidence and this is what I want to see from my team.
“We must stay in our match plan, do what we have to do and be aggressive.”
Akin Famewo and Nathaniel Chalobah are both on their way back from injury, along with keeper Ben Hamer, while it was confirmed this week that Mallik Wilks has joined Rotherham on a season-long loan.
The game is live on Sky Sports and kicks off at noon.
