Wednesday fought back to take a point in a largely tepid 1-1 draw with Charlton at Hillsborough this afternoon.

At 1-0 down, Gabriel Otegbayo was the man on the mark with 14 minutes left as he turned home the equaliser from six yards after Charlton keeper Will Mannion failed to hold onto Sean Fusire’s cross into the box under pressure from Nathaniel Chalobah.

It takes our unbeaten run to three matches, all drawn, and sees us move onto minus three points with three games remaining.

Chances were at a premium in a low-key opening spell before we almost gifted Charlton a goal on 20 minutes.

Otegbayo played a poor pass straight to Matt Gooden in the penalty area, his shot was blocked and from the rebound Greg Docherty brought a diving save out of Pierce Charles.

Six minutes later, we were close to earning a spot kick when Tayo Adaramola jinked in from the left-hand side and was brought down by Reece Burke just as he moved into the penalty area but referee Thomas Parsons ruled it was outside the box and gave a free kick.

We failed to get a shot on target in the first half and the visitors were close to taking the lead in added time when Matt Gooden turned the ball against the bar from close-in and Jaden Heskey competed the clearance by heading off the line.

However, we fell behind within four minutes of the restart, defenders standing off to allow Godden to control the ball six yards out, turn and stab the ball into the corner of the net.

Sonny Carey then went close to putting the visitors two-up on the hour as he was allowed to move forward into the box, only to see his shot come back off the inside of  the post.

That let-off seemed to jar Wednesday into some positive attacking action, sub Charlie McNeill heading over when he should have hit the target, while we forced a series of corners in front of the Kop as we pushed Charlton onto the back foot for the first time in the match.

And the improvement in attacking play was rewarded with that Otegbayo equaliser on 76 minutes.

The day could have got even better for the young defender 11 minutes later when the outstanding Max Lowe sent a cross just beyond the far post but the inrushing Otegbayo steered his close-range effort wide, so leaving hopes of that first home league win of the season resting on the final match of the season against West Brom.
