Wednesday strengthened our play-off hopes with a somewhat flattering 3-0 victory at home to Birmingham.
The win takes us five points clear of seventh-placed Norwich, ahead of Saturday’s games, and first goals for the new strike partnership of Jordan Rhodes and Sam Winnall was another plus on the night.
We began the game aggressively and deservedly took a ninth minute lead when Rhodes headed home from close range. However, that early promise soon faded and the visitors twice hit the woodwork before the break.
Wednesday again started the second half well, only for that to be short-lived as Birmingham pressed us back.
Craig Gardner saw his long-range effort strike the bar on 79 minutes but we scored a second almost immediately, Winnall diving to head home an excellent cross from Jack Hunt.
Then, with four minutes remaining, sub Adam Reach was played through by Winnall and fired home in clinical fashion to complete the scoring.
