Loanee strikers Connor Wickham and Matty Fryatt inspired Wednesday to a first win of the season in emphatic style at home to Reading today.
The 5-2 victory over one of the pre-season favourites also lifted us out of the bottom three.
Dave Jones praised the all-round team performance and said: “It’s been coming – it has just taken longer than we thought it would.”
Jones said he thought the luck we haven’t had in recent weeks went our way today and praised the “Premiership class” of Fryatt and Wickham and the performance of Michail Antonio, indicating that he had been close to leaving him out.
Fryatt cracked Wednesday ahead on 16 minutes and Antonio made it two 10 minutes later with a 20-yarder.
Pogrebnyak pulled a goal back 10 minutes from the break but the two-goal cushion was restored when Wickham’s shot came back off the keeper, hit defender Morrison and rebounded into the net.
Wickham all but sealed victory when he smashed the ball home from 12 yards on 57 minutes and 10 minutes later the debutant sent Fryatt clear from just inside the Reading half to net number five.
Adam Le Fondre scored with a late penalty after a foul by Roger Johnson but Wednesday were not to be denied a first win.
