Much-changed Wednesday bow out of FA Cup

Three goals within 12 minutes of the start of the second half ended Wednesday’s short-lived FA Cup run in a 4-1 fourth round replay defeat at Coventry tonight.

A much-changed side fell behind after just three minutes when Kasey Palmer was allowed to run across the penalty area and shot home past Pierce Charles from 15 yards.

However, Wednesday were level within seven minutes when Coventry made a hash of trying to clear a Will Vaulks’ cross and Bailey Cadamarteri fired low into the far corner of the net from inside the box.

The scoreline remained at 1-1 at half time but any thoughts of  causing an upset in the second half were ended as Coventry swept us aside with that three-goal burst inside eight minutes.

Callum O’Hare restored Coventry’s lead five minutes after the restart, shooting past Charles from 12 yards, and the same player curled in a third soon afterwards.

Two minutes later it was 4-1 with Haji Wright heading home from inside the six-yard box and Ellis Simms missed a great chance to make it five.

Wednesday finished a well-beaten side and all attentions now turn to Friday night’s televised home Championship clash with Birmingham as we cling to those diminishing hopes of staying in the division.
