Moore’s take on breaking club record as Owls stretch lead at top

Darren Moore reflected on Wednesday’s record-breaking 20-match unbeaten run after seeing us stretch our lead at the top of division one to three points after the 1-0 win at Charlton.

Liam Palmer’s calm finish from 12 yards out after just nine minutes put us ahead and with more clinical finishing the game could have been all but over by half time.

The home side were more dangerous in the second half but Wednesday held firm and, with nearest challengers Plymouth going down 5-2 at Peterborough, we are now three points clear at the head of the table, with a game in hand and a far superior goal difference to that of the Pilgrims.

Ipswich remain eight points behind us in third and have also played a match more than ourselves.

Manager Moore said of the new club record of unbeaten league games: “We’re really pleased with the record. It seems a long time when you go back to the start of the 20-game run, but we’ve just focused on applying ourselves game by game, one at a time. We have this record but we’ll put it to one side and keep going.

“We don’t look at anybody else, we focus on us as a group and as long as we’re being competitive and showing our level best then we can’t argue with anything.”

Analysing the win, the boss looked back on missed chances to extend the lead in the first half, saying: “I said at half-time that we could have been three, maybe four goals up. If there was one mark-down today, it was that we could have had a more ruthless mentality.

“But, on the flip side, I thought the concentration levels off the ball were exceptional and that’s earned us another clean sheet and three points.

“It was an excellent away day performance. We started quickly and the boys did really, really well.”

Reece James was a late injury casualty, suffering from ankle soreness, with Jaden Brown coming in for a rare start and providing the assist for the only goal of the game.
