Monk: Hoilett tackle deserved red card

Like most of the 25,000 crowd, Garry Monk believed Cardiff’s Junior Hoilett should have been sent off after his second-half tackle on Liam Palmer saw the Wednesday defender having to be helped from the pitch with an ankle injury.

Hoilett received only a yellow card and Monk said: “I don’t want players sent off at all but it is a red card.  That’s as clear as anything, the fourth official is four yards away but they don’t give it.

“It is for the officials to control and they have obviously got that one wrong.”

The Owls boss said Palmer will be assessed in the morning, adding: “Right now Liam’s ankle has swelled like a balloon so it’s too soon to see what the damage is but it doesn’t look good.”

Steven Fletcher was again ruled out of the Cardiff game as he continues to recover from illness and Monk said: “Steven is back on the training pitch but it’s just about building him back up now, Hopefully we’ll have him back for the Hull game on Wednesday.”

Massimo Luongo was ruled out of the Cardiff match following his head injury at Stoke.
