Miserable run goes on as woeful Wednesday set unwanted record

Wednesday are left still searching for a first Championship win of the season after another hapless performance in a record-breaking 1-0 defeat at West Brom that leaves us now sitting seven points from safety at the foot of the division.

And it could be worse by tomorrow evening with the two teams just outside the bottom three – Watford and Swansea – both in action then.

It was a yawn of a game at the Hawthorns with West Brom seemingly content to sit on their early goal while Wednesday stood off the opposition time and again and the defeat leaves us with just two points from those opening 10 games … the worst start to a season in club history.

We fell behind after only 13 minutes when Akin Famewo allowed Jed Wallace to break clear down the right and his cross was turned home by the unmarked John Swift at the near post.

Wednesday might have been level two minutes later, Ashley Fletcher’s low cross was too strong and  Juan Delgado failed to make contact, although he should have chosen his left foot and not the right as he tried in vain to turn the ball home from close-in.

Tyreeq Bakinson then went close with a curling 20-yarder which home keeper Alex Palmer tipped over the bar.

However, we were soon on the back foot again, Devis Vasquez saving the day when his outstretched leg blocked an effort from Okay Yokuslu after a mighty scramble in the Wednesday penalty area and Matt Phillips headed straight at Vasquez from inside the six-yard box.

The second half was just about a total non-event with the only effort of note coming on the hour when goalscorer Swift sent a shot from the edge of the box over the bar.

West Brom hardly looked like promotion candidates but the Owls once again lacked aggression, desire and ability and, despite some vociferous backing from the sold-out away end, it was an all-too-familiar sinking feeling for those Wednesdayites at the final whistle.

To complete another miserable display, we also finished with 10 men after Famewo had to be helped from the field late on with what looked like a serious groin injury.

Vasquez, Palmer, Iorfa, Bernard, Famewo, Vaulks (Buckley 76), Bakinson (Hendrick 76), Delgado (Valentin 58), Musaba (Wilks 76), Smith, Fletcher (Gassama 64). Unused subs: Dawson, Byers, Paterson, Gregory.
