‘I told players this story would have a happy ending today’

Danny Rohl told his squad at this morning’s pre-match meeting that Wednesday’s story of the season would have a happy ending today … and his message came true.

Speaking after the 2-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light saw us put the finishing touches to a tremendous revival under Rohl and confirm our continued second tier status, the manager said: “I said to the team in our meeting ‘this story will have a happy ending today, it is our story and and nobody can stop us’.

“Maybe we are a good example of what it means when you believe in all the things.”

He added: “It is difficult to describe all the emotions today. It has been a tough journey this season with lots of ups and downs. But we have always come back from the setbacks, we never gave up and I’m very proud of my team.

“To take three wins from our last three games, two away and the other against West Brom, is outstanding.

“We have climbed the mountain, we have got back up from the floor.

“In our preparations for this game, the key message was to come here and get the job done, to come here and win. We could not and would not rely on any other team, we had to rely on ourselves.”

Rohl praised his players and staff for their support and togetherness during the season, also thanking the chairman for giving him the opportunity to manage the club and on the supporters he said: “To the fans, you have been amazing and thank you so much.”

And from the London Owls we say ‘Thanks to you, Danny, for achieving the Great Escape 2024. Your tremendous hard work and abilities have turned what looked a hopeless cause into something we could only dream of a matter of months ago’.
