Gray bemoans late Huddersfield equaliser

Stuart Gray was left as frustrated as most of the near 21,000 Hillsborough crowd as Wednesday threw away victory after taking a late lead against Huddersfield.

Sub Sergiu Bus looked to have secured the points with his first goal for the club – a scrappy close-range effort after 86 minutes – only for some slack defensive work to allow Ishmael Miller the chance to steer home the equaliser three minutes later.

Gray said: “We scored the late goal ourselves and should have closed out the game. I think some of the players thought there was a foul in the build-up on Kamil Zayatte but you have to play to the whistle.”

He added: “We had chances but couldn’t make the breakthrough, so when we did score so late in the game, you expect to hang on.”

Huddersfield had a first-half David Edgar effort blocked on the line by Marnick Vermijl and the same fate befell Atdhe Nuhiu soon after half-time when Joel Lynch somehow got back to clear his goalbound shot off the line.

The draw leaves Wednesday with just one win in our last eight games at Hillsborough but we stay in 12th place and the point means we are now all but mathematically safe from relegation.
