Wednesday were dealt a big blow today with the news that leading scorer Steven Fletcher is expected to be out of action for up to 10 weeks.
Fletcher, who has been in outstanding form this season, was stretchered off with what looked like a serious knee injury during the FA Cup win at Brighton on Saturday.
Garry Monk said today: “Structurally his knee is fine but he will be out for a significant period, roughly around eight to 10 weeks.
“It’s a blow for us, losing any player, but especially our top scorer in such good form.”
The absence of Fletcher for such a long period is likely to see Monk step up his efforts even further in the current January loan window to bolster our attacking options.
Of the current squad, Atdhe Nuhiu, Jordan Rhodes and Sam Winnall have all been given opportunities in recent weeks but, apart from the Rhodes hat-trick at Forest last month, they have hardly caught the eye.
In addition, Fernando Forestieri appears to still be some way off a return to action after his knee problem picked up at Charlton in November.
