Fernando eyes return for Newcastle clash

Fernando Forestieri is available again for the Boxing Day trip to Championship leaders Newcastle.

Forestieri has missed the last three matches through suspension, during which time the Owls have won twice, but he comes back into contention for the televised game and Carlos Carvalhal is likely to pitch the influential striker straight back into the starting line-up.

Wednesday have been hit by injuries in recent weeks, with Carvalhal describing the situation as “red alert”. He added that there are still injury doubts for the Newcastle game but said it is now more a case of “yellow alert”.

Gary Hooper, Barry Bannan, Kieran Lee, Almen Abdi and Will Buckley have all suffered injuries, while Jack Hunt has been ruled out by illness, and Carvalhal says it is too early to comment on who might return for the Magpies clash.

He said: “We have some, maybe five or six players that we are unsure if they are available.

“During the next few days we hope we can recover most, if not all, of them but at this point we are unsure.

“But it’s not a problem to us if we miss one or another player because we have shown everyone we are more than just 11 players.”
