Owls eyeing top spot after leading two slip up

Wednesday go into tomorrow’s lunchtime game at Derby knowing that a victory will take us to the head of the league one table.

Leaders Plymouth lost 2-0 at home to Port Vale tonight while second-placed Ipswich conceded a 96th minute equaliser against visitors Fleetwood, meaning a win against the Rams would see us topping the division, level on points with Plymouth but with a superior goal difference, while Ipswich would be a point behind us.

However, we go into the Derby game without injured pair Michael Ihiekwe and Lee Gregory. Both picked up knocks in the cup tie against Mansfield last weekend and Darren Moore confirmed today that neither will be fit to face Paul Warne’s side in what promises to be a tough test for the Owls.

George Byers is also still sidelined as we look to extend our encouraging league form which has seen us lose just once in the last 10 games and cemented us in our current third place in the table.

We will be looking for our first win at Pride Park since April 2006 when goals from Marcus Tudgay and Leon Best gave us a 2-0 victory.

Ex-Owls keeper Joe Wildsmith is expected to be in goal for Derby and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing may well be in their line-up after leaving Wednesday at the end of last season, as the home side look to continue their push to get into the play-off positions.
