Danny’s pride as Wednesday finish in 12th place

Danny Rohl spoke of his pride for the team, his staff and the Wednesday fans after a 1-1 draw at Watford in the season’s finale this afternoon.

The point sees us finish in 12th place, after narrowly avoiding relegation last time around, and now the attentions turn to off the field for what promises to be a busy and possibly troubling summer of activity.

That includes the future of Rohl himself but today his words were ones of praise with the manager saying after the draw with the Hornets:  “I am absolutely proud of my team. To finish in 12th after a long, long season makes me proud … top half of the table, this is fantastic.

“A big thank you to my team and staff. It makes me proud.

“We now need to recharge our batteries and a big thank you to everyone.”

The sellout travelling Wednesday contingent again gave brilliant backing to the team during the match and then saluted players, manager and staff jn a great send-off for the summer at the final whistle.

Rohl added: “It was emotional after the game. You see our supporters – they are the heartbeat of this club. They are outstanding in how much they support us. A big thank you to them all.”

As for the game itself, we dominated the first half with Josh Windass wasting a glorious chance on 10 minutes when he fired over the bar in a one-on-one situation after being gifted the ball by the home defence.

However, we were rewarded just before the half-hour mark with a set piece from the training ground.

Shea Charles sent a free kick to the far post, Callum Paterson headed it back across goal and there was Windass to turn the ball home from almost on the line.

That looked to be how it would stay at half time, only for Watford to strike an equaliser in added time as Moussa Sissoko burst clear of the Wednesday defence to latch onto a through ball and fire past Pierce Charles.

The home side, boosted by the goal, looked a sharper outfit after the break while Wednesday struggled to find their first-half rhythm.

Charles came to the rescue with important saves and then, with the Owls rallying in the closing minutes, we missed a great chance to take all three points, Olaf Kobacki shooting wide from inside the box after being set up by Yan Valery.
