Carlos Carvalhal said he will be speaking with Fernando Forestieri following the player’s sending off at Preston.
The head coach felt Forestieri’s first yellow card for diving was incorrect, saying that the player was blocked by the Preston defence, but agreed with the second booking for handball and was clearly disappointed at Forestieri getting himself sent off at such a crucial time of the season.
The striker gets an automatic one-match ban, which sees him suspended for Tuesday’s visit of QPR, and Carvalhal said afterwards: “We must talk about the situation internally with Fernando. We are in a period where we are deciding everything and we cannot make these sort of mistakes.”
However, Carvalhal added: “I never put the responsibility for losing a game on one player – we lose like a team and we win like a team.”
Reflecting on the game, the head coach felt Wednesday created dangerous situations but didn’t make the best decisions in front of goal and so failed to test the home keeper sufficiently.
He felt the sending off affected the balance of the team for a short period but said: “We did everything to try to win the points today and fought to the last second, even with 10 players.”
