‘Boxing Day’ legend Ian Mellor dies, aged 74

Wednesday have today announced the passing of our former player Ian Mellor at the age of 74.

‘Spider’ was signed by Jack Charlton in 1979 and will be forever etched in the club’s history for scoring the first goal, a 25-yarder in front of the uncovered Kop, in the 4-0 Boxing Day massacre against Sheff U in the same year.

He also scored another vital goal in that season, a diving header at Blackburn, to clinch a crucial 2-1 win over Rovers, sending the estimated following of 10,000 Wednesday fans into raptures and all but sealing our promotion back to the old division two.

Ian went on to make 79 appearances for Wednesday, scoring 11 goals, before moving to Bradford City in 1982. His son, Neil, also went on to play for Wednesday in the 2010-11 season.

The London Owls send our sincere condolences to Ian’s family at such a difficult time.
