Bannan likely to be sidelined for Oxford game

Barry Bannan is expected to sit out tomorrow’s home game with Oxford United as Wednesday look to extend our unbeaten league run to 10 matches.

The skipper had to leave the field during the first half of last Saturday’s draw at Exeter with a suspected hamstring injury. Scans have shown nothing more than a slight strain but manager Darren Moore says that, with the busy festive period approaching, Bannan is likely to miss tomorrow’s game as a precautionary measure.

Moore said the aim is to have Bannan ready for the Boxing Day trip to Fleetwood and explained: “He’s a wonderful player and talisman for us. But that’s why the precaution is there. If we take him out for one game it’s to save him for the remainder.”

On the plus side, fellow midfielder George Byers is in contention for a return to action after injury and Akin Famewo and Dennis Adeniran will both be in the squad following their lengthy lay-offs.

After successive draws on the road we remain in third place going into the match, three points behind leaders Ipswich and trailing second-placed Plymouth by two points.

Ipswich are at Wycombe tomorrow while Plymouth host Morecambe.

Oxford arrive at Hillsborough on the back of a seven-match unbeaten run which has lifted them to 16th in the table after a poor start to the season.
