Danny Rohl apologised to the travelling Wednesday fans for our first-half ‘no-show’ in the 1-1 draw at Cardiff on Saturday afternoon … but says our bid to take a late Championship play-off place goes on.
The Owls turned in a performance in the opening 45 minutes that lacked the expected intensity, creativity and energy needed to have a chance of achieving that goal, leaving Rohl to reflect: “In the first half there were a lot of spaces but we didn’t use them. We turned back and passed back and didn’t get in the opponent’s half. It is not what I want to see from my team.
“Some players deserved to start today, that is why I changed some things. Some players used the chance, some didn’t. Now it is a good signal for who is ready for the final matches. I am very clear after this game what I want to see next week.
“I am angry with the first-half display which was not good enough and I apologise to our travelling supporters for the first 45 minutes. I take the responsibility and criticism because I chose the starting eleven.
“In the second half we hurt them much more but it was a bit of a shame we couldn’t do this over 90 minutes.”
Rohl also called on his team to “go all in” for the remaining seven matches, saying: “We have reduced the gap from six to five points to the play-offs, it means we look up and I want to see a team who attack the next position.”
That starts with the Hillsborough clash against Hull next Saturday and Rohl said: “Our last home win was back in January and it is time for the next three points at home.”
He added: “We have to attack now, we have nothing to lose. This is the mindset I want to see from the players, from us as a club and from the coaches.
“We know it is a tough race with seven games to go but last year we started with a draw after the international break and everyone knows how it ended.
“But it is not just a wish. For our dream, we have to work hard, to be ready, to play with intensity, with a good mindset and right attitude and direction. If we do this … then let’s see.”
