Mabel’s Tavern – our home in the capital for televised Wednesday games – have passed on an ’email of thanks’ from a Canadian couple who found themselves spending the last night of their holiday in England alongside the London Owls.
The couple, Daryl and Janet from Novia Scotia, watched us beat Rotherham 2-0 on the way to the play-offs and emailed:
‘On the evening of April 4, 2017 my wife Janet and I spent the last evening of our one-month European vacation at your establishment. The next day we flew home to Nova Scotia, Canada.
It was a wonderful evening, in part because we were introduced to the Sheffield Wednesday football club who were playing that evening. More importantly, we met some of the dedicated fans who come to your establishment to watch their team’s matches on television.
They filled us in on the team, its journey from a play-off loss last year to contention this season. The fans around us were friendly, generous and funny. We had a wonderful evening.
When we got back home we followed Sheffield Wednesday’s progress up the table towards a Premier League spot.
When we saw the result of the play-off match we thought of the heartbreak that must have been prevalent in your establishment. To lose on penalty kicks after two hard-fought matches is a tough way to lose.
We wanted to write to let your patrons know we are thinking of them and we hope their team can build on this season’s success to make it to the top of the league next season.’
Cheers, Daryl & Janet
* Many thanks to Daryl and Janet, you are now honorary members of the London Owls! And thanks also to the management and staff at Mabel’s Tavern for their hospitality during the past season.
