Gary’s emotional ‘thank you’ after pre-match tribute to dad Don

Gary Megson has sent an emotional message of thanks to everyone at Sheffield Wednesday after the touching pre-match tribute to his dad and Owls legend, Don, before Friday night’s game with Bolton at Hillsborough.

The fans of both clubs in the near-30,000 crowd joined with players and officials in a heartfelt minute’s applause for the man who skippered Wednesday throughout the sixties, including in our FA Cup final appearance against Everton in 1966.

Son Gary, a former Wednesday player and manager, said: “Thank you to every one of the supporters of both teams for the tribute paid at last Friday’s match.

“My family, both here and in America, watched it with tears streaming down our faces. My dad would have been humbled and overcome as well.

“I’d like to thank chief operating officer Liam Dooley, media manager Trevor Braithwait and the chairman, Dejphon Chansiri, for organising it.”
