Wednesday go down to S6 friendly defeat

Wednesday went down 2-0 to La Liga side Rayo Vallecano in our pre-season friendly at Hillsborough this evening.

The visitors took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Unai Lopez’s low cross was turned into his own net by Jack Hunt.

Dennis Adeniran then saw an effort cleared off the line and we began the second half in encouraging fashion with keeper Stole Dimitrievski fumbling a fierce drive from Josh Windass onto the post and  preventing the loose ball from crossing the line.

Ben Heneghan went close soon afterwards but it was Rayo who struck again on the hour, Fran Garcia breaking clear down the left and pulling the ball back for Randy Nteka to slot home their second goal of the night.

As usually happens in such warm-up games, the second half saw a host of substitutions on both sides and one of those Wednesday replacements, Sylla Sow, had a great chance to pull a goal back with 15 minutes remaining, his close-range snapshot going straight at Dimitrievski when an effort either side of the keeper would surely have reduced the arrears.

Wednesday continued to have more of the game but rarely threatened after that Sow chance and Rayo ran out 2-0 winners.
