Wednesday eye fourth place

Wednesday go into tomorrow night’s home game with Crewe knowing that victory would take us into joint fourth with Plymouth … and with a game in hand on Argyle.

The Easter Monday division one action saw us slip out of the play-offs after Wycombe Wanderers got a late point in a 1-1 draw at struggling AFC Wimbledon to lift them to fifth place on 77 points from 44 games, while Plymouth and play-off rivals Sunderland drew 0-0 at Home Park, lifting the Black Cats into sixth, also on 77 points (played 43) and Plymouth remaining in fourth on 79 points (played 44).

However, while those two draws dropped us to seventh on 76 points (played 42), a win against already relegated Crewe at S6 tomorrow evening would take us level with Plymouth and two points clear of Wycombe and Sunderland.

We will also still have a game in hand on both Argyle and Wanderers and make the trip to face Gareth Ainsworth’s team on Saturday.

Sam Hutchinson and Dominic Iorfa were both ruled out of Wednesday’s squad through injury for the weekend win at MK Dons while Massimo Luongo missed the game with a chest infection and Harlee Dean was forced off before half time with a calf problem.

We will be hoping to stretch our unbeaten run to eight games when we play Crewe and so further strengthen our play-off bid with less than a fortnight of the league season remaining.
