Thompson calls for Wednesday to show ruthless streak

Neil Thompson said Wednesday need to be more ruthless at both ends of the pitch after another weak display in the 3-0 defeat at Brentford.

With the Owls again failing to show the fight, will-to-win and  belief needed to pull away from the relegation zone, the caretaker boss said: “They were three really disappointing goals.

“The first one has to be cleared. The second, we were down to 10, but you’ve got to deal with it. They were all poor goals to concede.”

He added: “We didn’t create enough chances, we more than matched them for large periods in terms of having the ball, but it doesn’t matter how you play when you’re in our situation, we need to win games.

“We have to be more ruthless at both ends of the pitch.”

Keiren Westwood missed the game, tweeting that he has broken ribs, while Massimo Luongo is expected to be out for another five to six weeks with his knee injury.

Thompson said: “The news on Keiren and Massimo isn’t what you want to hear but that’s the reality.”

Looking ahead, with Luton away on Saturday and a crucial home game with fellow strugglers Rotherham next Wednesday, the caretaker boss said: “There’s a third of the season left so we have to look positively.

“We’re disappointed but we have to find it from within to lift ourselves and go on a run.”
