Monk critical of Birmingham ‘boss’

Garry Monk is unlikely to be giving a warm welcome to Birmingham counterpart Pep Clotet when his former club come to Hillsborough tomorrow evening.

Monk told today’s pre-match press conference that he was sacked by text from his manager’s role at Birmingham in the summer, being replaced by his assistant, Clotet, who was appointed caretaker head coach at St Andrew’s.

Talking before the Championship clash, Monk said that he does not speak with Clotet – also his assistant at previous jobs at Swansea and Leeds –  and added: “What is most important to me when I am assembling a staff around me and to work with me, the key is to give them the opportunity and show them complete trust.

“You hope they repay that trust with hard work and loyalty – sadly not everyone has those values in their character.

“Some choose to pursue their own opportunities in the worst possible way but the most important thing for me is you live and you learn.”
