Lee on the mark as Owls draw with Reds

A close-range strike from Kieran Lee just after half-time earnt Wednesday a 1-1 draw in a lacklustre pre-season friendly at Barnsley this afternoon.

Lee turned the ball home after ex-Owl Adam Davies in the Barnsley goal could only parry Gary Madine’s long-range effort.

Danny Wilson’s side had taken the lead on the half-hour when slack marking in the penalty area from Conor Hourihane’s free-kick allowed Danny Rose to turn the ball past Keiren Westwood.

The Owls rarely threatened in the opening half, Davies turning over a Chris Maguire free kick, while Westwood was hardly tested at the other end.

Maguire went closest to clinching victory for Wednesday when Davies turned away his cross-shot while Rose missed a great chance with a header at the other end and Maguire had to clear off the line from Sam Winnall.

Stuart Gray fielded an understrength line-up but Tom Lees made his debut at the back, while Westwood played a full 90 minutes in goal. However, overall it was a far from inspiring display from the Owls as we lacked creativity and a real cutting edge in the final third.

Owls: Westwood, Young, Lees, Zayatte, Floro, Lee, Corry, McCabe, Maghoma (Nuhiu 64), Maguire (Croasdale 80), Madine (Dieseruvwe 74). Attendance: 5,193
