Jones: It’s time to stand up and be counted

Dave Jones says it is time for the Wednesday players to stand up and be counted as we prepare for next Saturday’s Hillsborough derby clash with Doncaster.

Defeat would surely see Milan Mandaric acting over Jones’ future after our desperately disappointing start to the season and, in the aftermath of the capitulation at Birmingham, the Owls manager talked of people “standing up and being counted” and of players needing to be “big and brave” for the S6 showdown.

Speaking of the coming week’s preparations, he said: “We’ll find the players this week that will do that. The ones who don’t want to do it won’t be in the side.”

Comparing the commitment of the tremendous Wednesday support at Birmingham with the on-field performance, Jones said: “The fans never stopped … they were absolutely magnificent and that should hurt the players. They should realise the fans kept going and we should have kept going.”

He added: “We are all in this together … I am the front person and I will be finding out who wants to play and who wants to put their bodies on the line.”
