It’s Santa Claude as Owls grab late winner

Claude Dielna’s last-gasp effort saw Wednesday chalk up a second successive win at Blackburn today.

A poor game looked to be meandering towards a 1-1 draw when Dielna, who had only just come on as a late sub, curled a shot from just outside the box and it deflected past Rovers keeper Jason Steele to send the 2000 Wednesday fans behind the goal into raptures.

Another unlikely scorer – Kieran Lee – had given us a great start when he slotted home from close range on three minutes after Stevie May’s mishit shot came back off Steele.

However, the Owls faded somewhat after a bright opening and Rovers were level after 16 minutes when Alex Baptiste was allowed to turn the ball in from close range after Jordan Rhodes headed on.

Wednesday were then further disrupted 10 minutes from half-time when Lewis McGugan was stretchered off with what looked like a neck injury.

We struggled to keep possession for any decent spells of play in the second half and, while Blackburn weren’t much better, Keiren Westwood did have to produce a tipover save from Ryan Tunnicliffe … before Dielna struck with his late, late winner to take Wednesday to within four points of the play-off positions.
