‘I will give the fans a team to be proud of’

Garry Monk says he is determined to give the fans a team to be proud of after a hugely disappointing second half of the season came to a close with yet another home defeat at Hillsborough on Wednesday evening.

Speaking after being beaten 2-1 by Middlesbrough and with a possible points deduction to follow – either for this season or next – as we still await the result of the EFL misconduct charge hearing, Monk said: “The negativity is there right now and rightly so, I understand that.

“But I can promise one thing, I can see the bigger picture and I will give the fans a team to be proud of. I’m determined to come through these moments and get to a better day.

“Tonight was the second half of our season in a nutshell, we had chances we should have done better with, then the defensive lapse and we get punished for it.”

Referring to Kieran Lee and Atdhe Nuhiu, who may well have both played their last games for Wednesday in the Boro defeat, Monk added: “Kieran and Atdhe have been terrific and I will speak to them later. No decisions have been made as yet but they extended their contracts until the end, they chose to do that to help the club and their attitudes have been fantastic.”
