Hooper rains supreme at Birmingham

Wednesday moved back into the play-off positions with an excellent 2-1 win at a rain-soaked Birmingham on Saturday,

We lost Kieran Lee to injury in the warm-up and then saw Sam Hutchinson and Keiren Westwood forced off inside the opening ten minutes but we showed the aggression, desire and skill to bounce back to take all three points after going a goal down.

Play-off rivals Birmingham took the lead just before half time when the returning Tom Lees saw his attempted clearance deflect off ex-Owl Michael Morrison and into the path of Clayton Donaldson, who finished clinically.

However, Wednesday had looked an attacking threat in the first half and stepped up another gear after the interval.

The promise was realised on 77 minutes when a slick passing movement ended with Gary Hooper smashing a 20-yarder high into the net for the equaliser.

And two minutes later the 3000-plus Wednesday fans behind the goal were in dreamland as Fernando Forestieri pulled the ball back for Hooper to tap home the winner.

It was arguably our most important victory of the season so far and takes us back into sixth spot, one point behind fifth-placed Derby and two points clear of nearest rivals Ipswich.
