George Hirst is expected to return to action with the under-23s on Friday and could progress into our injury-hit first team squad.
That was the surprise news from Jos Luhukay on Thursday morning concerning the young striker, who has not kicked a competitive ball for Wednesday at any level for several months since talks over a new contract broke down.
Luhukay said: “He is training with us this week and plays for the under-23s tomorrow. It is a positive situation at the moment but I don’t know about the future.”
The manager confirmed that Hirst can figure for the first team but added that, as he has not played a competitive game for seven or eight months, it will take time for him to reach the necessary levels of fitness for that to be considered.
