Four-goal Owls up to fifth spot

First-half goals from Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper and Kieran Lee and a late fourth goal from Lucas Joao saw Wednesday defeat ten-man Brentford and move up into fifth place in the Championship promotion chase.

The visitors were dealt a big blow on five minutes when Yoann Barbet was dismissed after being adjudged to have fouled Hooper as the in-form striker burst clear.

Seven minutes later, the Owls were ahead when Forestieri headed home and worse followed for the Bees on the half-hour mark when Hooper latched onto Keiren Westwood’s clearance and fired home from outside the penalty area.

Then, right on half-time, Kieran Lee made it three when he converted from Hooper’s headed pass.

Wednesday had chances to increase the lead after the break but had to wait until the 89th minute when Joao fired home a fourth.

With Derby losing at home to MK Dons, victory sees us move up a place into fifth spot and only four points off second-placed Middlesbrough, although they do have two games in hand.
