Four defeats in a row for struggling Owls

Wednesday’s wretched run of form continued with a 1-0 defeat in our basement battle at Wycombe this afternoon.

This fourth successive reverse leaves us on minus four points and 10 points from safety … and already needing a major upsurge in form to give us any chance of surviving relegation.

It also came against a struggling Wycombe side who were able to record their first win of the season and their first-ever victory in second tier football.

Both sides struggled to get shots on target in the first half and our only effort of note saw Callum Paterson force a decent save out of home keeper Ryan Allsop.

Then, just as it looked like it would be a first-half stalemate, Wycombe struck with the only goal of the game in added time. Joe Wildsmith produced a fine save from Daryl Horgan’s long-ranger but when the corner came over David Wheeler glanced a near post header across goal and into the net.

Early Wednesday possession after the break gave some hope of a revival but that soon disappeared and Wildsmith produced another good stop to deny Scott Kashket.

With Wycombe defending deeper as they nervously protected their slender lead, we exerted more pressure late on. However, although the match stats showed 16 efforts from Wednesday, only three were on target and the last of these came in added time when Paterson’s effort was tipped away by Allsop.

Wildsmith, Borner, Iorfa, Palmer, Harris (Brown 60), Bannan, Pelupessy (Kachunga 67), Windass, Reach, Marriott (Rhodes 77), Paterson. Unused subs. Dawson, Odubajo, Hunt, Dele-Bashiru.
