Former Owl Iain Hesford dies, aged 54

Former Wednesday keeper Iain Hesford has died at the age of 54.

The highly-rated Hesford was an England under-21 international when signed by Howard Wilkinson from Blackpool in the summer of 1983.

However, Wilkinson chose another summer signing – Martin Hodge – ahead of Hesford for the season opener at Swansea. Hodge then went on to make a remarkable 214 consecutive league and cup appearances for the Owls and Hesford left Hillsborough three years later without having played a first team game for the club.

Despite this setback, Hesford then enjoyed spells at Sunderland and Hull before moving to play in Hong Kong, where he actually played against a touring England side for a Hong Kong national team.

The London Owls send their condolences to Iain’s family at this sad time.
