Fletcher off target as Owls held at home

Recalled Steven Fletcher was left to reflect on a hat-trick of missed chances as Wednesday had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw with Hull City.

We began in typically slow style and survived a couple of early scares before Fletcher fluffed his first opportunity on the half-hour mark, breaking clear in the box but seeing his effort foiled by the leg of Hull keeper David Marshall.

Wednesday fell behind on 38 minutes when Jarrod Bowen fired against an upright and, although Cameron Dawson did well to save the rebound from Evandro, Frazier Campbell pounced to hammer home the loose ball.

However, we were back in the game soon after the break when Reece Burke was adjudged to have fouled Fernando Forestieri and the Wednesday man got up to deliver the equaliser from the penalty spot.

Buoyed by this, we began to take a grip of the game and Fletcher could – and should – have clinched all three points with two excellent openings inside 10 minutes.

First he nodded wide from close in and then he peeled off the defender at the far post and headed back across goal towards the opposite corner, only to see his effort drift agonisingly off target once again.

Marshall then foiled Forestieri as Wednesday continued to look for the winner late on but we were left having to settle for a point against mediocre opposition.

Dawson, Baker, Lees, Hutchinson, Pudil, Fox (Thorniley 44), Pelupessy, Bannan, Reach, Forestieri, Fletcher (Matias 72).
