Caretaker boss Lee Bullen expects Wednesday’s new manager to be named within the next few days.
Steve Bruce remains the odds-on favourite to take charge at Hillsborough, particularly after two of his past assistants – Stephen Clemence and Steve Agnew – were at Hillsborough for Saturday’s win over Preston.
Bruce is currently on a pre-planned Christmas break but Bullen said after the Boxing Day win over Middlesbrough: “I would think there will be an announcement in the next couple of days. It is not the sort of thing you want dragging on and dragging on.
“I think it needs to be done sooner rather than later so the players know exactly where they stand as well because you don’t want people in limbo.
“The sooner it is done the better, in my opinion, especially with a transfer window coming up.
“I don’t know where we are at financially. That’s not my remit but there is the potential to freshen things up and go from there.
“It would be nice for it to be done from that point of view but I genuinely don’t know what is happening.”
Bullen, who has won both games as caretaker manager and has stated that he would love to stay at Wednesday in some capacity, added: “I will just keep going until I’m told different. The players have been fantastic, they’ve shown professionalism, discipline and the fight for each other that has got us the two victories.”
After the win over Boro, Bullen said: “The players have put in a right shift against one of the most experienced teams in the Championship. They’ve battled for everything, covered for each other and I’m delighted for everyone connected to the club.”
He added: “The first 10 minutes were tough, the next 35 were splendid after a change in formation. We deserved to go in front and the second half was very dogged.
“We had to stand up to a bit of an onslaught, but the discipline, communication levels and understanding of what we wanted were fantastic.
“Considering Middlesbrough had so much pressure on us, I can’t remember Keiren Westwood having a real save to make.”
Bullen was also full of praise for the support of the travelling Wednesday fans and for their vociferous backing of the team throughout the 90 minutes.
