Bannan salvages point from ‘two down’

Wednesday came back from two goals down inside the first 22 minutes to grab a 2-2 draw at home to Stoke on Saturday afternoon.

Barry Bannan’s cracking free kick 12 minutes from time levelled matters after a woeful start and the draw keeps us one point from the play-offs, in ninth place.

We fell behind within two minutes when the unmarked Benik Afobe hammered the ball into the roof of the net from close range and things got worse 20 minutes later when the ex-Owls loanee netted again as the Wednesday defence looked in vain for an offside flag.

With the visitors totally dominating matters, it was a total surprise when we got back in the game soon afterwards, Marco Matias slotting the ball past Jack Butland after good approach work from Bannan and Steven Fletcher.

While Wednesday showed more signs of an attacking threat from then on, Stoke looked the more likely to get the next goal and will reflect on three or four excellent opportunities to increase their lead.

However, the Owls had the last say with Bannan curling home a tremendous free kick to clinch what was an unlikely point after the shocking opening period.
