Windass hits debut goal as Owls take point

Wednesday survived heavy Barnsley pressure in the later stages to take a point from a 1-1 draw at Oakwell this afternoon.

With loan signings Connor Wickham and Josh Windass going straight into the starting line-up and Fernando Forestieri and Alessio Da Cruz also in the line-up from kick off, we got off to the best possible start, Windass firing us into a 17th minute lead from inside the box.

However, the lead lasted just eight minutes when we gifted the home side their equaliser. Cameron Dawson made a hash of a clearance after hesitancy between him and Forestieri over a harmless-looking Barnsley through ball and when the miscued kick found Cauley Woodrow he returned it into the empty net from long distance.

Wickham showed his strength when he powered through down the right-hand side and into the box but his pull back failed to find a Wednesday player as we looked to restore our lead before the break.

Da Cruz missed an excellent chance just past the hour mark, shooting wide when well placed, and another great Wednesday chance went begging four minutes from time when Jacob Murphy burst clear but his shot was blocked by a combination of keeper Brad Collins and defender Clarke Oduor.

However, it was the home side who looked much the more likely to get a winner in the final 20 minutes, with our shaky-looking back line riding their luck on a handful of occasions before we could make the short journey back to Hillsborough with a share of the points.
