Wickham signs on loan and eyes debut against Rams

Derby County

Connor Wickham has completed a loan move to Wednesday and is expected to figure in tomorrow’s home clash with Derby.

The 19-year-old Sunderland striker, who scored for the England under-21s in their 4-0 midweek win over Sweden, joins on a youth loan, which means his parent club could ask him to return after 28 days.

Wednesday tried to seal a loan deal for Wickham back in November but Sunderland were unwilling to let him go at that time. However, the recent signing of Danny Graham from Swansea means that Wickham has slipped down the attacking pecking order and now boss Martin O’Neill is keen to see the player get first team action elsewhere.

It means that Wednesday could line-up with a strike force of Leroy Lita and Wickham for tomorrow’s game with the Rams.

Reda Johnson is still sidelined with his ankle injury but, otherwise, Dave Jones has a full squad to choose from.

Derby, who are still chasing a play-off place, have sold their initial allocation of 3,000 tickets.
