Wickham in Poyet talks after loan deal ends

Connor Wickham is to have talks with Sunderland manager Gus Poyet next week after his latest loan spell ends at Hillsborough … with Stuart Gray hoping he can extend the young striker’s stay at S6.

Wickham, who can’t play at Rochdale tomorrow, has his farewell game at Millwall on Tuesday evening and Poyet has confirmed he will then speak with the player about his immediate future.

Stuart Gray has also spoken with Poyet about the situation and said: “We want to get Connor sorted. Hopefully it can be sorted out pretty soon. I’ve had conversations with Gus Poyet and I think Gus wants to speak to Connor as well.

“Connor is very keen and wants to stay, so fingers crossed that a deal can be thrashed out with Sunderland.”

There is still the possibility that another club makes an offer for Wickham before next Friday’s transfer window deadline and Sunderland decide to accept – or that someone agrees a loan deal that is more attractive to the Wearsiders.
