Why Owls rejected BBC radio deal

Wednesday’s management have explained why they rejected BBC Radio Sheffield’s new commentary deal offer.

Director of Communications, Trevor Braithwait, told the Fans’ Forum on Monday evening: “We wanted a 10 per cent increase and they came back with a 10 per cent decrease. We didn’t ask for any more money. We compromised and would have stuck with the same money.”

The decision means that Radio Sheffield are no longer broadcasting live commentaries of Wednesday games, with fans having to subscribe to the club’s iFollow package if they want the same service.

Mr Braithwait added: “There was a line in the sand and we thought this was a time we would go alone. We will now offer a bespoke Sheffield Wednesday service.

“It is a brave step. We believe this is the way forward.”

Chairman Dejphon Chansiri said if they didn’t make a stand now then the BBC would continue to seek reductions each season, adding: “I believe next year we are going to have many clubs following us.”
