Wednesday survive late scares and regain second spot

Wednesday leapfrogged Sheff U to go back into second spot with a nerve-jangling 2-1 win over Tranmere.

Goals from Reda Johnson and Chris Lines inside the first seven minutes saw us off to a great start and we should have had more before half-time as the Owls threatened to chalk up a big win.

Johnson had an early second-half goal ruled out for a foul but we failed to show anything like the attacking prowess of the first half and  substitute Ian Goodison pulled a goal back for Tranmere eight minutes from the end.

That led to some scary moments for the majority of the 24,000-plus Hillsborough crowd as the visitors pressed for an equaliser that had looked so unlikely after our tremendous opening.

However, unlike against Huddersfield and Walsall, we held on for the points – and with Sheff U losing 3-2 at Carisle, we move back above them into second place . . . two points clear of Danny Wilson’s side but still five behind leaders Charlton who defeated Brentford 2-0.
