Owls knocked off the top after Morecambe defeat

Wednesday lost their place at the top of the division one table after controlling the game at Morecambe for an hour this afternoon but then falling to a sucker punch from the home side.

The first defeat of the season, conceding our first goal at the same time, sees us slip to second place, two points behind new leaders Sunderland and with five more clubs also on 10 points but behind us on goal difference.

We totally dominated for long periods but lacked a cutting edge, with just two shots on target from 13 efforts, while Morecambe grabbed the points with their only shot on target from six attempts and that being an own goal.

It came on 63 minutes when an inswinging corner was flicked on at the near post and turned into the net, being credited to Dennis Adeniran.

The goal also appeared to take a lot of the earlier confidence and flowing football out of Wednesday and while we continued to press we rarely looked like grabbing an equaliser.

It was a different story before Morecambe took their shock lead, with Lee Gregory seeing an early effort blocked by keeper Jokull Andresson and Jaden Brown just failing to connect with Barry Bannan’s low cross.

Jack Hunt’s ball to the far post clipped the top of the bar after another fine Wednesday move and then Gregory’s flicked header at the near post went across goal and just wide.

We continued to dictate after the break and almost took the lead on 48 minutes when George Byers’ 20-yard curler beat the keeper but came back off the upright.

Gregory was next to go close minutes later when he turned sharply in the box and fired just over the bar. Then Adeniran set up Brown in the penalty area but he hesitated as he tried to get the ball onto his left foot and the chance was gone.

At this stage, it looked just a matter of time before we would break the deadlock and Gregory brought a diving save out of Andresson after being sent through by Bannan just before the hour-mark.

However, in typical Wednesday fashion we got caught out with that scrappy Morecambe goal soon afterwards and, even though there were 28 minutes left, we lost some of our composure as we chased the game and with it any chance of taking at least a point back to S6.

Peacock-Farrell, Hunt, Iorfa, Palmer, Brown (Kamberi 66), Adeniran (Wing 74), Bannan, Byers, Paterson (Corbeanu 66), Johnson, Gregory. Unused subs. Wildsmith, Brennan, Dele-Bashiru, Sow.
