Wednesday forced to shuffle pack for tough cup test

Injuries and cup-tied players will see Dave Jones making changes once again for Wednesday’s long trip to Southampton in the Capital One Cup third round on Tuesday evening.

Ross Barkley and Martin Taylor have both already appeared in the competition this season for Everton and Watford respectively while Jay Bothroyd and Rhys McCabe are expected to be ruled out through injury.

Bothroyd has a knee problem, suffered during Saturday’s home defeat to Bolton. He was booed off the field by some fans when substituted and then hardly endeared himself to Wednesdayites when he responded to after-match criticism on Twitter by describing some supporters as ‘f***ing thick’.

McCabe was subbed at half-time after suffering a thigh injury and Reda Johnson is not expected to figure because of a foot problem that kept him out of the Bolton game.

Joe Mattock is available after suspension while strikers Gary Madine, Chris O’Grady and Chris Maguire are likely to be in contention for a starting place, alongside keeper Stephen Bywater and young winger Paul Corry.

Premier League Southampton can also be expected to make wholesale changes from the side that beat Villa 4-1 on Saturday as Wednesday look to record our first-ever win at St Mary’s.

* The derby clash at Barnsley on December 15 will be live on Sky with a 5.20pm kick off.
