Wednesday ease into second round

Wednesday bounced back from the disappointment of defeat at Preston with a 4-1 win over Chesterfield in the first round of the Carabao Cup at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening.

We fell behind against the run of play on 38 minutes, Kristian Dennis scoring from the penalty spot after Daniel Pudil was adjudged to have handled.

However, that was tough on Wednesday and a quickfire double from Gary Hooper and Stephen Fletcher just before the break put a fairer reflection on the half-time scoreline.

Hooper finished well from close range to equalise and Fletcher powered home a header.

We then allowed Chesterfield to come back into the game after half-time before Barry Bannan fired home a spectacular third on 75 minutes and Sam Hutchinson confirmed our place in the second round seven minutes from time.

Hutchinson then found himself in goal for the closing minutes after Joe Wildsmith was injured in a clash with ex-Owl Chris O’Grady. With the Owls having used all our subs, Hutchinson took over as emergency keeper but did not have a save to make.

Wildsmith, Hunt (Hutchinson 58), Lees, Pudil, Reach, Wallace, Jones, Abdi (Winnall 69}, Bannan, Fletcher (Matias 75), Hooper.
