Owls booed off after opening day shocker

Wednesday were booed off at the final whistle by many of the near 6,000 travelling fans after producing a worringly sterile performance in our 1-0 Championship opening day defeat at Preston.

We were outplayed and outfought by a home team unlikely to be more than a mid-table outfit at best over the season and could have no complaints about the outcome.

The decisive goal came on 80 minutes when Tom Lees brought down Jordan Hugill and Daniel Johnson sent Keiran Westwood the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Shortly before that, ex-Owl Tommy Spurr saw his header come back off the bar as the home side increased their dominance in the second half and the closest Wednesday came to a goal in a punchless display was when sub Ross Wallace saw his 20-yarder fly inches off target.

When the team and manager came across to salute the Wednesday fans at the end of the game only Westwood escaped the boos from a large chunk of the supporters … and the team could have no arguments about such a reaction.
