Wednesday beaten by two first-half Matt finishes

Two first-half goals from Matt Phillips sent Wednesday to a 2-0 defeat in sweltering conditions at West Brom this afternoon.

We fell behind after just five minutes, Phillips heading home from a Conor Townsend cross and it was 2-0 seven minutes from the break when Phillips converted Townsend’s low centre.

In between the goals, Wednesday twice threatened through Josh Windass. He shot wide on 10 minutes after an excellent through ball from Sam Hutchinson and then brought a save out of David Button in the home goal.

However, Windass was forced off just before half time when he pulled up with an injury. Dominic Iorfa was subbed at the interval, in a pre-planned move, with Chey Dunkley replacing him.

Sub keeper Joe Wildsmith made a fine save from Grady Diangana soon after the restart but Wednesday failed to trouble the home side as both sides made more changes during the second 45 minutes and the game ended in a 2-0 defeat.

Wildsmith (Dawson 78), Dawodu (Brennan 29) (Galvin 75), Iorfa (Dunkley 46), Hutchinson, Brown, Luongo (Hunt 75), Adeniran (Waldock 75), Bannan (Dele-Bashiru 69), Windass (Triallist 42), Shodipo (Triallist 69), Adedoyin.
