Wednesday back in loan market after striker blow

Wednesday have already made enquiries for new loan signings following the loss of Michail Antonio and Connor Wickham.

After Wickham’s return to parent club Sunderland at the end of last week, Wednesday were delivered a second blow within 24 hours when Antonio was stretchered off against Cardiff and then ruled out for the rest of the season with a groin injury.

Talking about possible loan signings, Dave Jones said: “We are trying, we are looking and we have asked some questions of other clubs. We have been knocked back once or twice already while others have said come back in a few days time and ask again.”

Jones said he could look for more than one loan addition to the squad but that anyone coming in would have to be right for the club.

At the same time, Jones has thrown down the gauntlet to some of our attacking fringe players to show their worth and grab the opportunity left by Antonio’s injury. That’s a call to the likes of Jermaine Johnson, Gary Madine and Chris Maguire to convince the manager that they are the answer to our striking problems.
