We need wins not draws says Steve

Steve Bruce says Wednesday need to turn draws into wins if our late push for a play-off place is to come to fruition.

Talking after a well-deserved point in a 1-1 draw at sixth-placed Derby took his unbeaten record to eight games as Owls boss, Bruce said: “It’s nice to keep the unbeaten run going, we’ve won four and drawn four, but with a couple of those draws being wins, the picture would be different.”

We still sit six points from the play-off positions with 10 games remaining and, with a midweek trip to struggling Bolton and a home game with out-of-form Blackburn next Saturday, Bruce added: “If we can be down to a three or four points gap with eight games to go then who knows what could happen – but we have to turn the draws into wins at this stage of the season.”

With the score at 1-1 at Derby, Wednesday thought we had taken the lead 10 minutes from time, only for the referee to rule that Sam Winnall had kicked the ball out of Rams’ keeper Scott Carson’s hands before netting in a goalmouth scramble.

Bruce said: “I thought the referee had given it but he must have seen something and it’s ruled out.

“Whether the ball was in the keeper’s hand, it looks that way, I will have to take a look at it on the video. I hope it’s the right decision.”

Talking about the overall performance, Bruce said: “We gave the ball away cheaply in the first half too often. But even then we still had one or two really two good opportunities.”

He added: “We’ve played really well in the second half and I’m disappointed with the draw really, this is a tough place to come to against a team that’s been in and around the play-offs for a good few years.

“We’ve kept them out for most of the game after their one-goal lead early on. Keiren has made two or three saves near the end but we defended well overall.”
